Neuromodulation Q & A

What are neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are wrinkle-relaxing injections that target the muscles in your face to fight fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. They are injected directly into the underlying muscle, which relaxes your facial muscles and smoothes out the overlying skin.

Because neuromodulation essentially freezes the muscles in your face, it’s only used to treat wrinkles and creases caused by muscle movement, known as dynamic wrinkles, such as:

  • Frown lines
  • Laugh lines
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet
  • Wrinkles between the eyebrows

Neuromodulators aren’t effective treatments for wrinkles caused by volume loss or naturally saggy skin. Unlike other anti-aging treatments, neuromodulators also offer the added benefit of preventing future wrinkles from forming.

They’re minimally invasive and require little to no downtime — perfect for busy people on the go.

Are there different types of neuromodulators?

There are three popular neuromodulators used to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, including:

Botox

The most well-known type of neuromodulator, Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that blocks nerve signals and paralyzes muscle movement to smooth fine lines and minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles. Botox can treat an array of wrinkles, but is most commonly used to improve dynamic wrinkles in the upper face — forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, and wrinkles between the eyebrows. While the results are temporary and last about four months, Botox can help prevent future wrinkles from forming.

Dysport

Dysport works much in the same way as Botox, but it primarily focuses on improving wrinkles of the glabella — the area between the eyebrows. It is targeted toward patients with moderate to severe wrinkles, especially those who continue to notice their deep lines when they are relaxed, not frowning or moving the muscles in their forehead.

Xeomin

Like Dysport, Xeomin is a neuromodulator that primarily smoothes out wrinkles between the eyebrows, known as the glabella. What sets Xeomin apart from the others is that it contains just one ingredient: botulinum toxin A. For patients who have previously used Botox and Dysport and noticed that the results faded over time, Xeomin is the perfect option, as the human body is less resistant to a pure-form injectable.
